Waterford, Michigan, in Oakland county, is 31 miles NW of Detroit, Michigan. The town is included in the Detroit metropolitan area. As of the year 2000 census, 73,150 people lived in Waterford.
Before European settlers came here in the 18th and early 19th century, the area was inhabited by the Iroquoian and Algonquian tribes of the Ottawas, Ojibwas, Hurons, Potawatomies, Sauk, Miamis, Sashabaws, and others. Lewis Cass, the third governor of the Michigan Territory, defined the boundaries of Oakland County in 1819. Waterford Township was incorporated in the year 1834.
